Betsy Solomon, MA

Two of the most distinguished African-American artists of their centuries, Henry Osawa Tanner (1859-1937) and Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) both enjoyed successful careers and achieved international acclaim.  Frequently inspired by Biblical narrative, Tanner painted in a style often associated with American Impressionism.  Lawrence’s paintings portray the lives and struggles of African-Americans in an abstract, colorful style.  Explore the lives, work and legacy of these two important painters.

Mythology: Stories, Art and Drama

Betsy Solomon, MA

Ancient Greek mythology has been an inspiration for artists throughout the centuries.  Stories of heroes, mysterious creatures, gods and goddesses have been brought to life in literature, drama, paintings and sculptures for hundreds of years.  Beginning with ancient Greece, this class will trace the use of mythological themes in western art up to the present day.  We will also explore the origins of Greek myth and the workings of oral tradition as they relate to art.  Art historical survey will be combined with selected readings (all reading materials provided) and a screening of Aeschylus’ Furies, a traditional Greek tragedy.
